If you would like a creative start to the day, there is no other place to be but the Service User Network Handicraft Group on Thursday mornings. This group is a service user led group that aims to offer support and recovery based arts and craft activities. The group is open to those who are currently or have previously experienced issues with mental health and are residents of Tower Hamlets.

Our Peer Worker Mr Rahman tells us about his creative morning at the Handicraft group below.

What a morning of creativity and making flowers from egg boxes? I couldn’t have come up with such an amazing idea myself. Being in the Handicraft group at Bowhaven on a Thursday morning was both exciting and fun.

When I first looked at the flowers they looked really vibrant, colourful but I couldn’t imagine how they were made, as we all sat around the table with the flowers in the middle. Everyone was looking at ‘Mercedes’ (the course facilitator who prepares and runs the session). The question that came to my mind was “flowers out of egg boxes? How?” But that was all sure to be dispelled as Mercedes was about to show us how it was done.

We were all given an egg box and a pair of scissors and carefully observed Mercedes and with good guidance we worked to make our egg boxes into flowers!

Grace (Co-Production and Involvement Worker) and I also attempted to make the flowers together. I must say it was hard at first.

I also made a flower vase for the flowers with the egg box and managed to stick all the flowers onto the box and neaten things up.

Everyone had a really good fun and a positive session and it was really nice meeting all the people who attended the session.

One thing for sure I’ll definitely make sure I keep my egg boxes in future!
