Last week, on the 7th March 2019 we celebrated University Mental Health Day, at Queen Mary University of London hosted by the Student Health department and the Student Life team. This day was all about inspiring people to talk about mental health and to take action to reduce the stigma of mental health.

There was a variety of activities on offer including:

  • Workshops
  • Taster Sessions
  • Games
  • A Photo-booth
  • A Conversation Booth
  • Arts and Crafts and much more

We were joined by some Support User Network (SUN) group facilitators who delivered a variety of inspiring workshops throughout the day.

Co Create

Patricia Rangel the facilitator of ‘Co Create’ delivered an art workshop and was joined by some Queen Mary University students. The Students really enjoyed the session.

One student said, “I haven’t painted in a very long time. I found today very therapeutic, as I’ve had a stressful morning”.

Another student described the ‘Co Create’ session as, “being really fun!”.

Creative Recovery

Margaret and Shar from Creative recovery delivered a ‘poetry makes sense session’, which was fully booked with loads of excited students and staff ready to explore the benefits of poetry as a form of mental health therapy.

Eden Sessions

Eden Sessions’ terrarium workshop was delivered by Lynette and was fully subscribed in the morning and afternoon. This workshop’s focus was to teach students and members of staff how to plant their own self-sustaining terrarium garden. This is the perfect type of gardening skill for a non-gardener. Once set up these gardens do not need taking care of as the carbon dioxide, oxygen and water is recycled in the glass in which it is held. The workshops were a great success, as everyone enjoyed the day’s learnings and were grateful to take home their own little gardens.

It was a great day of open conversation and fun activities and we look forward to celebrating University

Mental Health Day in style next year, in 2020.
